  • Understanding SPEP: The Partnership & The Process
    October 11, 2013 at 11:00 am
    • This webinar, presented by EPISCenter staff, will provide a basic overview of the SPEP and its context within the Juvenile Justice System Enhancement Strategy (JJSES). Content will include a brief summary of the research behind the SPEP, a description of the SPEP instrument, as well as the scoring and program improvement process. Participants will gain a better understanding of how the SPEP will impact both juvenile probation departments and service providers in Pennsylvania, and ultimately improve the services provided to juvenile justice involved youth, resulting in lower recidivism rates. Participants will have ample opportunity to ask questions following the presentation.

  • Preparing for the SPEP: Tips for Probation and Providers
    November 1, 2013 at 11:00 am
    • This webinar will focus on “prepping for SPEPping” or how service providers and juvenile court personnel can prepare for the SPEP. Participants will hear from a service provider and probation personnel who have been through the SPEP process and will learn about what types of services are eligible to be “SPEPped”, data necessary for “SPEPping” and what to expect in the SPEP interview and beyond. Participants will also learn about indicators that measure service quality, duration and dosage amounts of specific service types and the importance of assessment as it relates to youth level of risk to recidivate. Opportunity to ask questions will be provided following the presentation.

  • Understanding SPEP: Classifying Service Types
    December 13, 2013 at 11:00 am
    • This webinar, presented by EPISCenter staff, will provide a basic overview of service type classification.  Many programs offer more than one service, and therefore, may require “unpacking” to identify all of the services that can benefit from the SPEP.
    • This webinar will review how service type is determined and what services are in the three therapeutic categories:
      • restorative,
      • counseling and its variants,
      • and skill building services.
    • Within these categories, services are grouped according to their demonstrated level of impact on recidivism. Participants will learn what specific services fall within each group, including the duration (number of weeks) and dosage (number of hours) of each service necessary to positively impact recidivism reduction. Opportunity to ask questions will be provided following the presentation.
    • Check out these one-page fact sheets on service types to get familiar with how SPEP defines service categories.

  • Preparing for SPEP: Creating and Understanding Logic Models for Juvenile Justice Programs
    January 24, 2014 at 11:00 am
    • This webinar, presented by EPISCenter staff, will provide a basic overview of how logic models can be used by providers to help prepare for the Standardized Program Evaluation Protocol process. Logic models can help providers clearly communicate the services they offer and how those services are expected to influence youth behavior and outcomes. Logic models can be helpful for focusing provider activities and for providing some structure for the SPEP interview.

Dr. Gabrielle Chapman from the Peabody Research Institute at Vanderbilt University and Jeff Gregro, Deputy Chief Probation Officer in Berks County will available to answer questions. Dr. Chapman works closely with Dr. Mark Lipsey to implement SPEP in pilot sites across the U.S., and Jeff Gregro was the first person to complete a SPEP in PA, as Berks County served as the first pilot county. Jeff is also Co-Chair of the Advisory Group that oversees the SPEP roll-out in PA. Attendees are able and encouraged to submit questions in advance and will have plenty of opportunity to ask questions during this webinar.
